Six "power mousing" Mac tips for your personal productivity enhancement:
1. Reposition the window behind the frontmost, without shifting focus!
Ever have two windows open, one mostly on top of the other, and want to line them up better so you can see certain contents in both? Or more easily drag something from one to the other, perhaps.
Try this: Command-click and drag in the grey title bar of the window behind the frontmost, to move it around without shifting focus.
Power tip: You can even resize that same window while keeping it in the background, by command-click dragging in the little resize box in the far bottom right corner.

2. See your current document's location and move up the file hierarchy with ease.
Have you ever had a Word document open, and wondered where it actually lives in your file system? Or wanted to quickly access the other contents of your current document’s enclosing folder?
Try this: Command-click or right-click the name of the document in the middle of the grey title bar. You will see a drop-down menu appear showing the file’s location and allowing you to select one of the enclosing or folders
Works in Mail, Safari, Word, Finder - pretty much everywhere! Try it out, feel the navigation efficiency.

3. Open the enclosing folder of any item on your Dock.
If you're like us and you have a lot of applications, documents, or Stacks on your Dock, it’s often handy to be able to open the enclosing folder to reveal that item in the Finder.
Try this: Command-click any icon on the Dock. Watch in awe as your item is REVEALED!
4. Open a folder or sidebar shortcut in a new window!
Have you ever had a Finder window open to the right place, and wanted to open a second Finder window to put them side by side for easy dragging?
Try this: Set the frontmost Finder window to Column view with command-3 (because Column view rocks), then command-click one of your shortcuts in the sidebar on the left. It’ll open in a new window!
You can also command-double-click any folder in the main Finder window area (not the sidebar) to open it in a new window.
Power tip: This is the best way to clean your Desktop fast. Open a Finder window, go to Desktop, view as List (command-2), sort the columns by type or by date, and command-click your other PLACES to open more Finder windows as dragging/sorting destinations.

5. Move a file, while editing that file (and we're not talking "Save As...")
We often have a TextEdit or Word document open and want to move it to a certain place in the Finder, while still editing the file. For example, if we opened it right out of a Mail message (which automatically saves it to Mail Downloads in Library), edited it, saved it, and now want to move it into Documents while still working on it.
Try this: While editing the document, click and hold on the little icon in the document's grey title bar. You'll find it will appear to be picked up by the mouse cursor... You can drop it anywhere you want, dragging from there! Into Documents, the Trash, or onto the Desktop.

6. Rapidly selecting items in List or Column views...
In any list view, like in Mail or Finder, you can select multiple items very quickly by dragging vertically with the mouse cursor in the white space between the column text.
The horizontal drag, the pause-drag (where you click, hold for a second, then drag), or dragging the actual filename, will actually move the item.
Experiment with this! It can take a bit of practice.
How to undo: If ever you drag something and don’t have an easy way to put it back where it came from, just press Escape while still “holding” the item with the mouse, or else drag the item up onto the Finder menu bar across the top of your screen. You’ll see it bounce back, as if nothing happened. Worst case scenario, you can also usually hit command-z to undo. ;)
Macinhome reminder: Training can reduce stress and frustration!
If you find that your Mac system is a little bit annoying here and there, or thwarts you while you're trying to accomplish a certain task on a deadline, it's often an opportunity for a bit of training in that area.
Example: I want to send a document to a client, formatted in a certain way, and attached to the email in a certain way. I don't have much time, and it's just not working the way I need it to.
Imagine having the skills of a technician in that moment! Being able to troubleshoot the issue rapidly and send the file in another way, with ease.
That's what we do! Call us anytime. Contact info below.
