It’s tempting to despair, and gawk in baffled terror at your laptop, as the full glass of water you just knocked over drains into it. However, these very seconds are the crucial time where quick action on your part can rescue your endangered device.
Don’t stand there like a deer in the headlights! Spring into action with the below steps:
What to do immediately if you spill on your MacBook:
- Yank out the power cord. Obviously you can skip this step if it’s not plugged into power when tragedy strikes.
- Turn the laptop upside down. This is so that gravity can pull the water back toward the keyboard and out, away from the vulnerable goodies inside.
- Hold down the power button. This will force your MacBook, MacBook Pro, or MacBook Air to shut down. You will lose any work you haven’t saved, but there is no time for that – the stakes are much higher now.
- Leave it off for 48 hours. It can be tempting to turn it back on before 48 hours have gone by – DO NOT DO THIS.
Once the above 4 steps are complete, you aren’t under as much of a time crunch. You can turn the machine over, open but off, on a pillow to help gravity continue to do its thing. Then, you’ll want to take it to a specialist who can take off the bottom case and asses the logic board for damage.
Finally, you might like to pray. This is definitely a time of peril.
