Confessions of a consultant

By February 2, 2015People+Technology

I’ve been a hypocrite.

I spend most of every day enthusiastically talking to people about how they should stop wasting time, stop coping, and pay my company to fix their problems. I can even be a bit annoying about it sometimes.  😉

Well… I’m ashamed to say I was coping with a problem and wasting my own time. I threw a few seconds out the window several times a day, whenever I bumped into this little issue. It was a minor thing but I still felt like a bit of a fraud when I talked to clients about efficiency, and I can’t help but laugh at the irony.

Like the doctor who sneaks out back for a smoke!

I won’t get into the technical details but the short version is my contacts were not syncing between Mac and iPhone. It was about 4 months of this. To make matters worse, I was adding contacts to my phone, so there was a bunch of info that was only on my phone and I didn’t want to lose it.

I’d run into the problem when I was on my Mac wanting to get ahold of someone and I realized their info was only in my iPhone. And my iPhone was over there on the coffee table! Grrr.

Those little moments of annoyance seemed insignificant but whenever it happened my anger was triggered and I had some more adrenaline and cortisol in my system. My mental/emotional state dropped a couple notches. I was wound a bit tighter and 2% more likely to snap if something else went wrong later. Not to mention whatever long-term effects that had on my body.

I knew I could figure it out and fix it and I knew how much better it would be but it just hadn’t gotten bad enough.

I’d just settled into reaching for my phone every time I needed to contact someone. It was easier to cope with the “death by a thousand cuts” and do the little work-arounds than to pause my day and do the 30-60 mins work to fix the problem.

When is it a good time to deal with it? Never. It’s never convenient.

I’ve since got it sorted and I can’t even tell you the relief and gratitude I feel now every time I add someone to my Mac or iPhone. I trust completely that it will show up on my other device and that is a damn good feeling.

So. If you can relate to any of this just call me. I guarantee I’ve been there, and I’d love to help.

Call my cell at 604-786-9779 anytime, day or evening.
